Sometimes Messy, Always Real

Season of Trust

30 August 2023

Y’all, I want to start by saying I know in my heart God is good. I’ve seen His hand through many seasons of my life. Can we acknowledge how hard it is to hold onto that when it seems, to our eyes, that there is a season of nothing in front of us?

My husband and I have recently made the decision, at the Spirit’s prompting, that he was to resign from his position after having been there for three years. We are so incredibly grateful how God orchestrated that job, it truly was an “only God could’ve have done this”, but we heard Him say it was time for more.

September is 100% covered plus some, and half of October has been taken care of, but beyond that, we don’t know what he is doing — or at least it hasn’t been revealed to us yet. I won’t lie, I am laying down fear every day.

Backing up a little bit, I will openly admit that I struggle with feeling anxious over finances. As our pastor puts it, every marriage needs a How and a Wow. J is the Wow and I am the How, no doubts about it. Fast forward to this past March (2023), we started hearing that whisper of “It’s time for more.” It has taken me five months to be at peace with God’s plan in this. We applied to so many different positions for J, most near my family in another state, and some here in Tennessee, but every door and window was closed, except for the ones that were working for ourselves.

Do Not be Dismayed

We recently felt release to share what is going on with his job about a week ago. The outpouring of connections and congratulations was so much more than I anticipated. J got connected with some people outside of our personal area and I am trusting those seeds are going to bloom.

The support that has meant the most to me, that I will keep in my heart, actually comes from someone we don’t know. She commented this verse on a share of my husband’s post on Facebook. Oh how this is what I am clinging to and speaking over our family.

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

Isaiah 41:10

Wildflowers

Along those same lines, my verse for the past couple years of my life, that I continually have to speak so that my head and my heart are in agreement, is Luke 12:27-28. (I actually had this verse embroidered by a friend, Thistle & Leaves. She’s amazing.) I don’t read this as an admonishment, rather I can hear Jesus tenderly whispering it.

Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?

Luke 12:27-28

Can I be honest? I don’t know why my faith shakes when it comes to His provision. We see time and time again how he is a good God who cares for his children. Heck, He’s a king, we are his children, we have access to those heavenly riches should he see fit.

Luke 12:28 Phone WallpaperDownload

Conclusion?

I am no theologian and this part of our story hasn’t concluded yet (but I needed a way to break up this paragraph from the rest). BUT I do know in my heart that God is good. He loves His children. He cares for us more than we can comprehend. It does NOT mean life is all sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows, but it does mean He’s still there walking with us when it is dark.

Also because I find myself easily moping when I listen to slow songs that are meant to be encouraging, here is the hype song that has been on repeat in my head to get my head and heart in agreement (it’s also in the Spotify playlist linked in the side column):

-even with how popular homeschooling is, people still question you
-flexibility and adaptability is KEY
-Rosie loves math
-I love hearing the kids identify flowers
-it’s okay to slow down
-We have made the right decision
-We’re playing the long game

Take a moment and take 5 deep breaths. I am right Take a moment and take 5 deep breaths. I am right there with you.

My husband started back to a full time job a week ago. I am so thankful and rejoicing for the Lord’s provision, but man am I starting to see the spiritual warfare coming for me.

I have been feeling a pull to step back from photography for a season to be just mom. The thoughts that have run through my head range from “you’re being dumb” and “you’re just saying that because you’re failing” to “you’ll lose everyone”.

I wish I had it figured out. I wish I knew exactly why I’m supposed to step away from what I’ve built. I don’t know if it’s just going to be an occasional thing or done forever or just for now.

when I was at @trevecca, we took a class with possibly one of my favorite professors. I don’t even remember what the class was called, but this particular day we were talking about the names of God. I don’t remember the whole class or even what led to talking about this before or after, but it has changed the way that I calm down.

YHWH - to speak His name even mimics the motion of breath. Inhale - Yah, exhale - weh.

So take a moment mama, away from the confusion of whatever is happening right now. Breathe Him in and let him wash over you.

““He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn’t live in man-made temples, and human hands can’t serve his needs—for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need.”

With both of us being ✨neurospicy✨ it was important to me to find a curriculum that allowed us to jump between subjects while still learning something rich. @gentle_classical_press I think will be just that for us.

Their primer course is theologically rich with a literary and nature base, which is perfect for our family, with lessons being 10 to 15 minutes max.

We will not be doing a formal reading or math lesson this year, unless R show signs that she wants to.

L will also be tagging along with their Preschool Morning Binder that follows the same letter progression as Primer!

We chose Honor School Tennessee so that we have complete control over her curriculum 🫶

I saw this post a couple days ago and I wasn’t s I saw this post a couple days ago and I wasn’t smart enough to save it, but the gist of it was how much of a blessing it is to let our coffee or tea go cold.

By nature, I find myself to be cynical. It’s something that I am convicted of, and am working on the best that I can. But this post that I saw really drove for me. I am not a hot coffee person, but I am a hot tea person. Used to get easily frustrated with my children if I wasn’t able to finish my cup of tea before it got lukewarm. Selfishly, I always consider that five minutes of drinking my tea to be my start to the day. No kid could get on me because it would be too hot if it spilled on them, which meant I didn’t have to be touched, annoyed, needed.

As a family, we are getting ready for the transition into homeschooling and my husband going back to working out of an office two or three days a week, which means I’m on my own. I am not going to have a lot of mornings where I can drink my tea while it’s still hot. But man, am I becoming more grateful for the reason.

I will be the first to say that my kids drive me up a wall more days than not right now, while we are juggling two toddlers and an infant. Toxic mom culture (or at least what shows up in my life and social feeds) would say to complain, drink some wine, block them out. Rarely do we see mom’s being encouraged to truly think on the blessings that are running around them at their feet.

Can I challenge myself and you today to respond with love and gratitude? To rewrite the paths in our mind from annoyance to thankfulness? To remind ourselves that our children are a blessing and not a hindrance?

Our children are a gift and a blessing. So I’m saying this to you as much as I’m saying it to me: let your coffee get cold.

The past three days have been full of emotions tha The past three days have been full of emotions that I wasn’t planning on feeling this week.

Wednesday night we found ourselves racing a thunderstorm to a friend’s basement to shelter in place and ride out a catastrophic storm system that came through Middle TN. Usually nothing comes of these storms. I am so glad we left for this one.

We were fortunate. Our house was halfway between two tornadoes. We turned on our security camera from our phones and watched until the house lost power, having no idea if our home was gone. Hearing warning after warning was nerve wracking.

After the front passed, friends of ours down the road were able to make it to our house. That 15 minute drive, I have never felt more fear. Trying to remind myself that it’s just stuff that can be replaced. I had my children and husband with me. We got a text saying that our house was perfectly intact. Cue tears of relief, but also feelings of guilt that we were spared when so many others weren’t. What purpose of God’s plan is it that so many people are without a place to call home?

I know I don’t have that answer, none of us do. It’s frustrating and confusing and honestly, makes me angry in moments.

But how much more does He care for us? It’s cliche “it’s all a part of His plan.” And that definitely doesn’t calm or soothe when you’re angry. But it’s also incredibly true. My family is a testimony of that.

Give yourself permission to be angry and yell. At the world, a tree, God. He wants your laments. He cares about them.

I know full well that it’s easy for me to say that He cares and provides when we didn’t lose anything, but know that He is here and ready to hold you through the crying and yelling and wondering why, in every aspect of life.

Every first Sunday of the month, our church has a Every first Sunday of the month, our church has a family Sunday. That means that the kids are in service with us for the whole service.

Some Sundays, we can make it the whole time. Today we only made it through worship before my son was disregulated, and my daughter was overwhelmed. Ironically, our six month old was doing just fine.

The last Sunday of every month, our church also does a family worship night. Most of the time it ends up with me or my husband being outside chasing the kids, singing when we can. A year ago, this would’ve bothered me to no end and made me feel less than. Two months ago, another mom was out there with me with her children, and I feel like she could sense what I was feeling. But she reminded me that chasing our children and attending to their emotional and physical needs is just as glorifying to God as singing.

There’s a bakers dozen amount of books on how motherhood is a mission field, but can we think about how true that is? Jesus invites children to him, wiggles, emotions, and all. if we don’t show that grace towards our children, how are they ever going to believe that Jesus does?

So today we left right after worship and went and got lunch, and now we’re home and going to read our @the.biggest.story book and talk about what Christ has done for us.

Bring them to church, mama. But don’t be afraid or ashamed if you have to leave to be able to show them love and take care of them. You are doing an amazing job.

Whenever we started having kids, we started having Whenever we started having kids, we started having the typical conversation of where and how we’d like to raise them. While that vision has changed over the past four years, the one thing that hasn’t, is being able to live somewhere where our kids can just go outside And explore.

In Charlotte Mason‘s volume Home Education, she stresses the importance of kids being outside. The value of fresh air and imagination that’s found when they are allowed to play.

By no means are we the 1000 hours outdoors family, I am way too scared of bugs for that, but the difference in attitude and imagination when my kids do spend longer hours outside, is undeniable.

I am forever grateful we are able to live somewhere that is bio diverse in our own backyard (and already fenced in), but it wasn’t unachievable when we lived in an apartment. Here are some things we did:

-Parks. Not just playgrounds, but parks with hiking trails. Peacock Hill Park is a great one for kids in the Franklin/Spring Hill area!

-Seek + iNaturalist apps. These have made nature more attainable for my children, while still being educational any new plant that we come across, they love to scan and see what it is.

-Nature Bingo. It’s looked different from our old department to the house that we’re in, but I’m making a small bingo chart for them to go out and cross off a popsicle is one of their favorite things.

-Outdoor reads. Now this will admittedly become less and less as it gets hotter in the cicadas start emerging, but we love, throwing the blanket down and reading books together.

-Lots and lots of bug spray. I am a bug attractor and have had more bug bites than I think my husband has ever had. I make our own bug spray as a roll-on, but having that easily accessible for them to put on themselves has been really big too, and given them a sense of independence.

What do you like to do to get outside?

I’m not gonna pretend like I have all the answer I’m not gonna pretend like I have all the answers. Some days are definitely better than others.

My husband and I are in a unique situation where we both have the blessing to work from home. However, there are times that means I leave the house for 5 to 6 hours at a time, leaving him with three children under five. Today was one of those days.

I had the incredible opportunity to do a content shoot for an artist at a local studio, but I meant I was gone for the better half of the afternoon. the physical and mental prep it took for that is something that I always forget about until it happens. Timing when O will nurse, fretting if he’ll take a bottle or not, getting the other two kids ready for a day with daddy, getting myself together and out the door, making sure I have the right bra on so I don’t leak through my shirt.

I have nothing profound to say, other than if you work from home, I see you mama. Today was a better day when I was out of the house, but not every visit is like that.

You are doing amazing, and it is OK to have bad days that does not make you a bad mom (preaching to myself right now).

I definitely paused in the middle of my study but I definitely paused in the middle of my study but I felt the need to share this.

Your God time doesn’t need to be at home.

For some reason this may be controversial. But with littles, it’s near impossible most days to have time with no one hanging on me.

Today, my God time looked like driving around after dropping off the bigs and waiting for O to fall asleep so I could sit outside our church and have my time before my book study.

I know it’s nothing new or profound and we’ve been told this a million times - but he meets you where you are mama.

Last year was a year of a lot of change for my fam Last year was a year of a lot of change for my family. My husband went full-time freelance, had our third baby, and we moved into a rental house (leaving the apartment we had known for three years).

I am so grateful for the opportunities that God has given us, and for how he has provided, but I find myself struggling with things, not exactly as I thought they would.

Looking back at this video, but part of the plan, when we moved into this house to vinyl wrap the countertops to help make it look less like a dungeon in the kitchen. We have been here for four months now, and that still hasn’t happened.

at the same time, I find myself getting frustrated with the lack of movement in my business as well. I know in my heart that my desire is to minister to other moms, to make them feel seen, to be a safe place, a man is it not pending out like I thought it would. this has been a week of “God are you even there?”

I started doing The Bible Recap this year with a group of women, and ironically, we are currently reading through Job. I didn’t realize how much I relayed with him until typing this out.

All of that to say, if you’re feeling like you’re in a season, where you’re just stuck, not moving forward or waiting, you are not alone. I know God has something amazing of his sleep for us, but man is it hard not seeing it yet.

So for now, I will keep tidying up my 1980s kitchen with the dark countertop, knowing that there’s more to come.

I’ve been noticing lately that many moms, especially SAHM/WFHM, are feeling like they are without community, support, you name it.

I want this to be a reflection of honesty and what is going on in my life and how I am walking through it with Jesus. Transparent and real.
